Lent Term Elections: The Results!

This has been a record-breaking year for LSESU elections – a whopping 3,895 votes were cast, proving that LSE students truly are something special: passionate, dedicated and amazing individuals.

A huge thank you from the whole LSESU team for everything you’ve done – voting, campaigning, nominating, video-making, penguin-costume-wearing and everything in between. It’s you guys that make LSE the place it is, and now you’ve elected the Officers who will take it into the future.

We’re delighted to announce your new Sabbatical Officers, Part-time Officers, AU Executive and members of the Democracy Committee and Trustee Board.

Sabbatical Officers


GENERAL SECRETARY:

This year’s race for General Secretary was incredibly close! Every one of your votes mattered. Nona Buckley-Irvine was re-elected with 1,375 votes in the third and final round, 239 more votes than Maria Cannatella’s 1,136 votes.

Your General Secretary will negotiate and set the agenda between the School and the SU, deal with press enquiries and media requests, represent the Union when liaising with external organisations, chair the Board of Trustees, and sit on School decision-making bodies including the Court of Governors, Council, Finance Committee, Equality and Diversity Committee and Estates Committee.


EDUCATION OFFICER:

In the fourth and final round, Jon Foster won with 1,069 votes, with Ahmed Saleh pulling in 928.

Your Education Officer will lead change in teaching and learning within LSE, raise awareness of academic issues, and liaise with students, course representatives, academics and the directorate to ensure that they have a voice and representation within the SU and the University. They will also lead on national education policy and sit on School decision-making bodies including the Academic Board.


ACTIVITIES & DEVELOPMENT OFFICER:

Katie Budd won in the third round with 1,071 votes, 281 votes more than Becca Brook’s 790 votes.

Your Activities & Development Officer will be responsible for leading the development of sports clubs, societies, student media, volunteering programmes and student events and exhibitions. They will also champion extracurricular activity, liaise with students involved in activities ensuring that they have a voice and representation within the SU and the University, and work on events such as Freshers’ Fair, Varsity, Welcome Ball and Tour. They will also chair the Activities Committee.


COMMUNITY & WELFARE OFFICER:

Aysha Fekaiki won in the final round with 1,021 votes, just 124 votes more than Lorcan o-Cathain’s 897 votes.

Your Community & Welfare Officer will be responsible for creating and sustaining the LSE community and being an active voice on student welfare issues at LSE. They will negotiate with the School to improve issues such as Halls of Residences and increased off-campus housing support, catering, equality and diversity issues and access to higher education. They will also work hard to maintain good campus relations, for example with the faith and national and cultural communities on campus through the Interfaith Forum.




Part-Time and Liberation Officers


ANTI-RACISM OFFICER:

Jasmine Bide won with 837 votes in the first round! She will campaign and hold debates and events on all issues to do with preventing racism in the SU and more widely.


BME STUDENTS’ OFFICER:

Mahatir Pasha with 636 votes in the first round! He will represent students at LSE and campaigns on the issues relating to BME liberation.


DISABLED STUDENTS’ OFFICER:

Your new Disabled Students’ Officer, Isobel Clare, won with 405 votes in the first round! This is a liberation position, and Isobel will ensure that the concerns of disabled students are heard. She will campaign for equality for disabled students and aim to prevent discrimination within LSESU and more widely.


ENVIRONMENT & ETHICS OFFICER:

Elena Bignami won with 595 votes in the final round. She will develop sustainability initiatives at the LSE, and runs campaigns on issues of ecology, social justice, peace and solidarity.


INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ OFFICER:

Damien Kemfack won with 559 votes in the final round. He will ensure that the concerns of international students are heard.


LGBT+ OFFICER:

Bryn Laxton-Coglon won with 563 votes in the first round. The LGBT+ Officer is a liberation position, and he will ensure that the concerns of LGBT students are heard. He will campaign for LGBT equality and aim to prevent discrimination within the SU and more widely.


WOMEN’S OFFICER:

Lena Schofield won with 532 votes in the third round. The Women’s Officer is a liberation position, and she will ensure that the concerns of women students are heard. She will campaign for women’s equality and aim to prevent discrimination within the SU and more widely.


RAG PRESIDENT:

James Wurr won with 1,118 votes in the first round. The RAG President leads the Raising and Giving society, the fundraising arm of LSESU.

AU PRESIDENT:

Julia Ryland won with 829 votes in the second round. The AU President runs the Athletics Union and ensures that different sports and clubs are fairly represented.
